The University of Waterloo officially broke ground on the New Residence project at UW Place on Tuesday afternoon. Speakers in the outdoor ceremony included UW Director of Housing Glen Weppler, who emphasized that the new residence will not only be a place for students to live, but a place for student life, including academic, social, and recreational functions. Other guests were Associate Provost, Students Chris Read; UW President Feridun Hamdullahpur, and Bernie Melloul, Chairman and Founder of Melloul-Blamey Construction, the builder of the project. In attendance were dozens of supporters including students, staff, and consultants, including several members of the MORe team, out to celebrate the start of construction of the 539-bed facility. The project is an infill that replaces a parking lot while improving pedestrian connections and providing enhanced community facilities for the entire UW Place site.
